The Friends of Baucau

Posted on May 2nd, 2008 by BB

Baucau is a village in East Timor with a population of 40,000 (48% under the age of 17). Its the 2nd largest town outside of the capital, Dili. Since 2004, a group in Melbourne called the Friends of Baucau have raised funds to build a community centre, much like a neighbourhood house here in Melbourne.

This community centre now has 8 staff members (all from the local Baucau community) who have been trained by volunteers from Australia to deliver programs for the community. This includes English language classes, computer training, women’s small business development, youth music and drama activities, a small library and public workshops on peace and anti-violence.

The Friends of Baucau community group do heaps of fundraising in Melbourne, with every dollar raised going directly to the community centre in Baucau. Any support provided will contribute to the re-building of our closest neighbour, East Timor.

Band Badges is proud to be working with The Friends of Baucau, in creating awareness badges to help raise funds and educate people about the struggles still facing East Timor and the efforts being made to assist the nation both here and in country.

Visit www.friendsofbaucau.org for more information and get involved!
